Copper Complexes of Benzoylacetone Bis-Thiosemicarbazones: Metal and Ligand Based Redox Reactivity

Bis-thiosemicarbazones derived from the ?-diketone benzoylacetone (H3banR, R=Me, Et, Ph) are potentially tetradentate N2S2 ligands whose coordination chemistry with copper is reported. In absence of oxygen and in presence base they form anionic CuII complexes fully deprotonated [CuII(banR)]–. Upon exposure to atmospheric undergo a complex series reactions leading two types products; one ligand oxidised ketone [CuII(banRO)] other an unprecedented dimeric di-CuIII [(CuIII(banR))2] depending on R substituent. Time-resolved UV-vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, spectroelectrochemistry, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy have been used identify intermediates way stable products formed under both anaerobic aerobic conditions. It found that ligand-centred Cu-centred oxidation occurring parallel this unusually complicated mixture products.
